The Sydney Night-time Economy Roundtable has released an action plan filled with ideas that help revamp Sydney’s nightlife scene.
Ideas such as an app to deliver real-time suggestions on entertainment, extending all public transport options until 4am on peak nights and increasing ease of access and wayfinding in the city were all raised by the panel, and may become a reality one year from now.
Deputy Premier Troy Grant was pleased with the outcome of the discussions but added that further action would be needed to implement some of the suggestions raised.
“I’m delighted these discussions have come up with some really innovative ideas for the Government’s consideration,” Mr Grant said in a recent statement to the media.
“Many suggestions that came forward were out of the scope of the Callinan Review but are none the less worthy of consideration as part of the government’s mission to make Sydney’s nightlife safer and more vibrant.
“All these issues will now be taken up and considered by the respective portfolio Ministers.”
Extended retail trading hours were also proposed by the roundtable, particularly on “high risk” nights such as Friday and Saturday, with a view to giving Sydney the image of a “24/7” city.
“There is a definite lack of after work shopping availability in the city after 6pm,” a participant in a City of Sydney nightlife survey said.
“Sometimes it feels more like a country town.”
