Relocation is the best solution
July 2006
I read with interest the article (Crossing Conundrum) by Amelia Pulsford in the June edition of the Sydney Observer in which some public schools located on busy roads, like Chatswood and Lindfield are mentioned. To these we could also add Warrawee, which like the other two is located on the Pacific Highway.
In my opinion, the best solution is to relocate those schools to other safer locations, as they are 100 years old and were built when car traffic was not a problem. Chatswood could be relocated to the nearby high school, and Lindfield could be relocated to the UTS site, also not far away, and Warrawee could be relocated to the nearby reserve on Blyteswood Avenue.
These large sites on the highway could then be rezoned for medium density (or commercial in the case of the Chatswood) and be sold to developers at a much higher price than their present value which would pay for the construction of the new school buildings on the new sites.
The private schools on the Pacific Highway have sufficient resources to build bridges so their students can cross safely. Chatswood also has a bridge, built by the developers of the two towers on the corner of the highway and Victoria Road. Students should be encouraged to use bridges where available.
