Sydney gardens get sophisticated
Sydney In Bloom hit town 21 to 25 of September with the mission to transform the Domain into a sea of plants, pots and patios, showcasing the works of some of Australia's most innovative and amazing garden landscapers.
Despite your usual fare of potted plants for sale and guest speakers, the show had scaled landscaped designs to wander through, all of which pushed the boundaries of the humble hills hoist and buffalo grass yard.
Jamie Durie's Turkish inspired design drew the crowds as he turned a patio into a tiered forum complete with cushions and hookahs.
Tupperware designers had a go creating retaining walls, canopies and even a pergola out of Tupperware containers. Gabion walls reached new heights in design, either filling the cages with polished stones for a demure walled walkway or even creating a day bed out of rubble.
Wolli watchers got a chance to get up close to the rare native breed of Wollemi Pine prior to its limited release later this year. The tree was a sturdy and robust specimen, deep green foliage offset by the ashen bubbly bark enhance the tree's already impressive mystique.
Despite all of the amazing ideas on display, the clear favourite was the Rolling Stone Landscape display. The idea of a water feature was taken to new places as they ran water through a glass-topped table, spilling over the edge and into the main pond. The humble barbeque was upgraded complete with built in bar fridge (filled with premium lagers of course) and the real eye catcher was the luxury boat that sat in the background, the perfect background to any luxury backyard.
While the majority of designs on display would be out of reach for your average gardener, there were enough ideas on show to inspire you to pick up the rake and start to revamp.
