Reporting for duty

by Martin Slattery
April 2005

It's sometimes said that the spirit of Anzac is being lost on our youth, but one North Shore schoolgirl is going to lengths to mark this year's 90th anniversary - Di Yu will be paying her respects at the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Gallipoli.

The year 10 Pymble Ladies College student is being sent to Gallipoli as the New South Wales winner of the 2005 National Simpson Prize, awarded by the History Teacher's Association, for an essay she wrote about the relevance of the Anzac spirit in today's society.

In her essay Yu proclaims that the younger generation still find meaning in the Anzac spirit, which has, "developed from a set image of the Digger to an inclusive term of general values of Australia... The Anzac legend will continue to remain central to the Australian awareness and symbolise the utmost achievements of our citizens."
